Hammering For Heroes

Saturday, September 12, 2015 - 9:00am

Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity will be holding its very first “Hammering for Heroes” build which will honor and memorialize heroes of 9/11.  Although we will never know all of the acts of heroism by ordinary people, we do know of the courageous responses of firefighters, police and EMT as well as other individuals who risked or sacrificed their lives to aid and rescue others after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  Habitat’s program will be specifically about remembering and memorializing the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the tragedy that was 9/11 and will also include honoring the survivors of the catastrophe and those continuing to serve in first responder and military capacities.  The build will be held on Saturday, September 12 from 8:00am until 2:00pm in Habitat’s Hopeview Estates subdivision in Spindale.

We will start our event with a program in which all branches of the military will be part of as well as representatives from our local Police and Fire Departments and Emergency Medical personnel.  There will be a group to present colors and we will have a local artist singing the National Anthem.  First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton pastor and Habitat Board member, Tim Marsh, will speak about the tragedy of 9/11 and have a time of prayer in remembrance of the lost and of those who rose in service.  This will also include those continuing to serve.

There will be opportunities for all age groups.  Ages 5-10 will be doing crafts and making greeting cards for our deployed troops.  There will be elementary school teachers present to help with the kids’ activities.  They will also lead a discussion about 9/11 and the importance of that day in the history of the United States as well as the importance of memorializing and honoring our troops and first responders.

Age group 11-15 will be doing yard work for local seniors in the community surrounding Hopeview Estates.  Ages 16 and up will be working on one of 2 projects for local veterans or on our construction site on houses that are already in progress.  The Women Roofers will also be undertaking a repair project.
